The fifth-place Richmond Tigers (10-6) have suffered a couple of more injuries to key players as the AFL season heads into the 18th round. The Tigers announced on July 28th that midfielder Corey Ellis and key forward Ben Griffiths both need to undergo the knife and it looks like they might not be back this season. Griffiths is expected to be out for eight to 10 weeks as he needs surgery to repair a damaged finger tendon. He suffered the injury in the Tigers’ recent 17th-round defeat to the league-leading Fremantle Dockers last weekend. Richmond is playing well this season and fans and punters can back them each week with a CrownBet AFL Bonus Bet. If the Tigers go deep in the playoffs, Griffiths may be able to see some more action this season.
As for Ellis, he needs to undergo an operation repair damage to his foot and he’s expected to miss between four and six weeks. Dan Richardson, the Tigers’ football manager, said Ellis had a similar injury during the preseason, but it was on his other foot. He remarked that the club believes the youngster should have the problem fixed now rather than risk further damage. Ellis, who was chosen with the 12th overall selection at the 2014 NAB AFL Draft, already underwent a minor foot operation back in December. Even with Ellis and Griffiths on the shelf, fans can support the Tigers with a weekly CrownBet AFL Bonus Bet promotion.
Richardson spoke with AFL.com.au about Ellis’ situation and stated, “It wasn’t a specific injury. He developed some soreness post-game and upon further assessment, and based on what he experienced on the other foot, we decided it was best to get it sorted out now. He’s certainly shown some good patches at AFL level this year but you’ve got to think long-term with young players. However, sometimes things heal quicker than expected.” The Tigers take on the red-hot third-place Hawthorn Hawks on Friday, July 31st at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and fans should remember to make their punt with a CrownBet AFL Bonus Bet.
