Forward Jonathon Patton of the Greater Western Sydney Giants has been cleared by doctors to return to full training after recovering from his second knee reconstruction operation. The 21-year-old is happy to be back, but won’t rush into things once he steps on the training ground. He said he needs to build up his fitness and confidence before he’ll be able to play in a game. Patton tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the 21st round last year. He also tore it in the third round of play in the 2013 campaign. While Patton may not be a good choice for a CrownBet AFL Brownlow Medal Bonus Bet this year, some of his Greater Western Sydney teammates could be.
Patton, a former number one draft pick told the press,
I’ve been training now for a while and I’m feeling really comfortable so I guess it’s just about whenever I feel right and my mind feels right to go out there. It’s just week by week. I don’t want to rush anything. I just want to get a really good training base first. But at the moment the boys seem pretty good out there without me so I might just sit back, relax and watch the show for a few weeks.

Since 20-year-old Cam McCarthy and Jeremy Cameron are playing so well for the Giants at the moment there’s no need for Patton to rush back. It’s more likely that he’ll head down to the NEAFL to get his confidence and fitness levels up to where they need to be. Patton headed over to America in February where he worked with Bill Knowles, a Philadelphia sports rehabilitation specialist. The player remarked that his rehabilitation for the second ACL surgery was quite a bit different from what he went through the first time he tore it. Patton stated that he worked on a lot of different things with Bill Knowles such as jumping and landing and change-of-direction techniques. He said he wanted those things to be like second nature to him when he left America. He feels it was well worth the long journey and he’s now looking forward to getting back into the thick of things as soon as he feels he’s ready.
