AFL Round 5 Review

The fifth round of the AFL season has just wrapped up with games taking place from Friday, May 1st to Sunday, May 3rd. Let’s take a look at the winners and losers from the past weekend of action.

Friday, May 1

CARLTON BLUES VS COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES

The weekend kicked off on Friday, May 1 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground where the Carlton Blues took on Collingwood in front of 71,759 fans. The Blues were no match for the Magpies as they were smoked by 75 points. It was quite a turnaround for Carlton as they had thumped St Kilda by 40 points a week earlier at Westpac Stadium. Collingwood took down Essendon by 20 points at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the fourth round and have now won three on the trot. The Blues are 1-4 on the season and sit in 17th place on the ladder while Collingwood climbed into second spot at 4-1. The head-to-head odds at CrownBet had Collingwood as the favourites at $1.50 while Carlton was listed at $2.60. Carlton went 1.1   2.3   5.6   6.9 (45) while Collingwood was 4.4   8.9   14.11  18.12 (120).

Saturday, May 2

RICHMOND TIGERS VS GEELONG CATS

The action resumed the following day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground where the Richmond Tigers faced off against the Geelong Cats (1-3). Richmond dropped a 32-point decision to the Melbourne Demons in the fourth round at the MCG while Geelong dropped a 16-point decision to North Melbourne at Simonds Stadium. This was a close affair with the Cats clawing out a nine-point win over the Tigers in front of 45,228 spectators. Richmond went 0.5   2.6   6.8   11.10  (76) while Geelong were 2.2   7.4   9.9   12.13   (85). It was the second loss in a row for the 2-3 Tigers who dropped down to 11th place on the ladder. The Cats are also 2-3 on the season and are sitting in 14th spot. CrownBet had Geelong as the head-to-head favourites at $1.76 with Richmond at $2.05.

SYDNEY SWANS VS WESTERN BULLDOGS

The Sydney Cricket Ground hosted Saturday’s matchup between the Sydney Swans and Western Bulldogs with a crowd of 25,541 on hand. The Swans were taken down by 14 points in the fourth round by the league-leading Fremantle Dockers at Domain Stadium for their first loss of the season while the Bulldogs smashed the Adelaide Crows by 57 points at Etihad Stadium. This was another close encounter with the Bulldogs coming out on top by four points. Sydney went 2.5  4.9   8.10   10.13 (73) while the Bulldogs were 5.1   6.8   10.9   11.11 (77). The Swans were the solid head-to-head favourites for this match with CrownBet at $1.15 while the Bulldogs were $5.50 to win. The 3-2 Swans lost for the second week running and are now in fifth place with the 4-1 Bulldogs winning for the second consecutive week and moving into third position.

GOLD COAST SUNS VS BRISBANE LIONS

The Metricon Stadium hosted the showdown between the Gold Coast Suns and the Brisbane Lions on Saturday with both teams entering the contest at 0-4 and rooted to the bottom of the table. Gold Coast was drilled by 66 points by GWS a week earlier at Manuka Oval while the Lions were manhandled by 53 points at the hands of West Coast at the Gabba. A total of 12,464 fans were on hand to witness Gold Coast win their first game of the campaign as they thumped the Lions by 64 points. The Suns went 2.3   7.9   14.10   18.10 (118) while the Lions were 2.3   3.5   7.8    7.12 (54). The 1-4 Suns moved up to 15th place in the standings following the victory with the 0-5 Lions are still in the cellar. Gold Coast was favoured by CrownBet in the head-to-head matchup at $1.75 to win with the Lions at $2.10.

NORTH MELBOURNE KANGAROOS VS HAWTHORN HAWKS

North Melbourne squared off against the Hawthorn Hawks at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. North Melbourne had beaten the Cats by 16 points at Simonds Stadium in the previous round while the Hawks dropped an eight-point decision to the Port Adelaide Power at the Adelaide Oval. The Hawks got back on track this weekend with a 60-point mauling of the Kangaroos in front of 38,077 fans. Jordan Lewis of Hawthorn was reported for striking North Melbourne’s Todd Goldstein in the first quarter of this contest. The Kangaroos were 3.1   4.3   7.8  10.10 (70) while Hawthorn went  6.4   7.8  12.13  19.16 (130). North Melbourne has alternated between losses and wins each week and are now 2-3 on the season and in 12th place on the ladder. The Hawks have alternated between wins and losses and their 3-2 record sees them in fourth spot. The Kangaroos were the underdogs with the CrownBet odds makers at $2.95 to win head-to-head with the Hawks at $1.40.

WEST COAST EAGLES VS GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS

Domain Stadium hosted the Saturday clash between Western Eagles and Greater Western Sydney Giants. The Eagles thumped the Brisbane Lions by 53 points at the Gabba in the fourth round while the Giants were busy destroying Gold Coast by 66 points at Manuka Oval. A crowd of 34,554 showed up for this match which saw the Eagles demolish the Giants by 87 points for their second big victory in a row. West Coast went 4.2  9.4  12.10  18.12 (120) while GWS was 3.4   3.4   4.8   4.9 (33). The Eagles have risen to fifth place on the ladder with their 3-2 mark while the Giants are also 3-2 on the year and fell to eighth spot. CrownBet had the Eagles as the favourites at $1.55 in the head-to-head market with the Giants at $2.45.

Sunday, May 3

MELBOURNE DEMONS VS FREMANTLE DOCKERS

The fifth round continued on Sunday with a match between the Melbourne Demons and first-place Fremantle Dockers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Melbourne took down the Richmond Tigers by 32 points at the MCG last weekend while the Dockers won their fourth in a row by dropping the Sydney Swans by 14 points at Domain Stadium. The Dockers made if five straight wins on the season with a 68-point thumping over the Demons in front of 22,892 fans. Melbourne went 2.2  5.4   6.8   6.14 (50) while The Dockers were 5.3   8.6   11.8  18.10 (118). Fremantle were the firm favourites with CrownBet at $1.17 in the head-to-head market with the Demons at $5.00. The undefeated Dockers top the table with heir 5-0 record while the Demons sit in 13th place at 2-3..

ST KILDA SAINTS VS ESSENDON

The St Kilda Saints took on the Essendon Bombers on Sunday at Etihad Stadium. The Saints were swamped by Carlton in the fourth round to the tune of 40 points at Westpac Stadium while Essendon dropped a 20-point decision to Collingwood at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The Saints were the underdogs with CrownBet in the head-to-head betting market at $5.25 to win this match while Essendon was the favourites at $1.16.  However, the match was closer than many experts expected as the Bombers edged the Saints by just two points in front of a crowd of 29,869.St Kilda went 2.6   6.7   10.10   11.14 (80) while Essendon was 3.2   6.6   9.11   11.16 (82). Essendon is now 3-2 on the season and ninth place on the ladder while 1-4 St Kilda has lost three in a row and fell to 16th position.

ADELAIDE CROWS VS PORT ADELAIDE POWER

The fifth-round footy action wrapped up with a third match on Sunday as the Adelaide Crows battled it out with the Port Adelaide Power at the Adelaide Oval. Adelaide lost their first outing of the season a week earlier when the Western Bulldogs took them down by 57 points at Etihad Stadium. Meanwhile, the Power was busy beating the Hawthorn Hawks by eight points at the Adelaide Oval. The Power triumphed again this week with a 24-point decision over the Crows in front of 49,735 supporters. Adelaide went 2.3  4.8  9.11  13.13 (91) while Port Adelaide was  5.1   8.1  12.6  18.7 (115). The Power were the favourites at CrownBet in the head-to-head wagering at $1.65 with the Crows at $2.25. Port Adelaide are 3-2 on the year at 3-2 with the Crows also at 3-2 and dropping down to seventh place.
